Horses are herbivores with
a highly specialized kind of digestive system, not seen
in any other animal species. Normally occupied with food
intake for nearly 20 hours a day, the horses diet
consists mostly of grasses, herbs, shrubs, leaves and
occasional fruit, seeds and granules. Their nutrition is
fiber rich and poor in carbohydrates. Their intake of
proteins and vegetable fats is rather low during
different intervals of the season. Due to the low energy
content of their natural feed stuffs, they are destined
to spread large amounts over a 24-hour period. Horses
must produce an abundant amount of saliva in order to
chew properly and breakdown their fiber rich diet before
it reaches the stomach, a process essential for proper
digestion. Initial breakdown occurs in the stomach,
which receives only small portions at a time. After 4
hours the contents leave the stomach and travels through
60 feet of small intestine before entering the colon. To
best understand the digestion process in horses, you may
want to read Karl-Wilhelm Hermanns’ account, “The
Horse’s Digestive Process” at
www.equerry.com/html/ate/eq_ate801.htm Looking at
this illustration you can begin to understand that the
horse it quite literally one gigantic mass of intestine.
It is easy to see why horses could colic should any
number of factors enter in to upset this intricate mass
of unique, well-organized assimilative process.
